Please prepare 15 minutes of music that best represents your artistic interests, focus, and profile. There are no repertoire limitations. Accompaniment is not required for instrumental auditions. Grand Rapids Civic Theatre is holding auditions for their 2023 Ten for All Playwriting Festival on Friday, February 17th from 6-9pm! Civic is seeking up to 15 actors ages 8-Adult for their five semi-finalist scripts. Roles are open to individuals of all races/ethnicities and gender identities.


Grand Rapids Civic Theatre is holding auditions for the musical SOMETHING ROTTEN! on Friday, February 10th from 6-9pm and Saturday, February 11th from 5-9pm. Auditions are open to the public. This production features a cast of 20+ adults (ages 16+) of all gender identities and ethnicities.

Those planning to audition for a Play will be asked to read from the script. For Musical auditions, prepare 16 measures of a memorized song and bring sheet music that includes a piano accompaniment line. Musical auditions will also include a dance audition. It is highly recommended that you plan ahead and send your audition video early. This will give you the best opportunity to pass the audition before the start of a course, and ensures that any minor issues can be resolved in advance. Having your audition in on time will ensure the ability to register the course you are taking.


Areas that will be evaluated in your audition include: physical balance, ease of movement, tone production, note accuracy, rhythmic accuracy, intonation, maintaining steady pulse, playing with appropriate tempo, dynamic variation, appropriate and consistent articulation, creation of motion in melodic line and phrase shaping and consistency with stylistic conventions.


For training in Units 1-4: Submit an audition of both specified pieces below to SAA. Roman numerals indicate the movement. Edition is your choice. An accepted basic audition qualifies the applicant to register as a participant in Units 1-4.


For training in the middle units: This audition may be used as an initial audition (as an alternate choice to the others), or after an accepted Basic Audition to continue training beyond Unit 4. Submit an audition of the specified pieces below to SAA. Roman numerals indicate the movement. Where two pieces are specified, both must be performed (except flute, where it is a choice of movements noted). Edition is your choice.


For training in All Units: This audition may be used as an initial audition (as an alternate choice to the others), or after an accepted Basic or Intermediate Audition for training beyond the level of the previous audition. Submit an audition of the specified pieces below to SAA. Roman numerals indicate the movement. Where two pieces are indicated, choose one. Edition is your choice. Play all cadenza sections (alternate cadenzas are allowed).


In addition to the general application requirements, each school has specific admissions guidelines and portfolio or audition requirements. Please click on the links below to view the details for each school.


Private instruction is a major component of all music degrees, and is offered to music majors and minors who pass an audition. Students may choose to either submit an online audition or perform an in-person audition. An audition attempt may be made once per semester. A passing audition result is valid for one calendar year.

Classical GuitarClassical guitar applicants must perform their audition on a classical guitar. Jazz and rock fingerings are not acceptable for this audition (see Jazz Guitar audition requirements instead). Applicants are expected to have a reasonable ability to read music notation (not just tablature).
