Synopsis
Part 1
The film begins with a spaceship landing in the Rajasthan desert. An alien (Aamir Khan) emerges from the spaceship naked and is greeted by a band playing music. He is fascinated by the sound and follows them to a nearby village. There, he sees a man wearing a necklace with a flashing green pendant. He assumes that it is his remote control for his spaceship and tries to grab it. However, the man runs away with the pendant, leaving the alien stranded on Earth.
The alien wanders around the desert, looking for his pendant. He learns that people call him "PK" (which means drunk or tipsy) because of his strange behavior and questions. He also learns that people say "God knows" when they don't know something. He assumes that God is someone who knows everything and can help him find his pendant. He visits various places of worship, such as temples, mosques, churches, and gurudwaras, but fails to find God or his pendant.
He then meets Bhairon Singh (Sanjay Dutt), a friendly bandmaster who takes him under his wing. Bhairon Singh teaches him how to wear clothes, eat food, speak Hindi, and earn money by selling bottles. He also tells him that there are different gods for different religions and that he should wear different symbols to please them. He gives him a locket with Hindu symbols, a cap with Muslim symbols, a cross with Christian symbols, and a bracelet with Sikh symbols.
One day, PK sees a poster of Lord Shiva on a truck. He recognizes him as the god who stole his pendant. He chases the truck to Delhi, where he loses track of it. He then sees another poster of Shiva on a building. He climbs up the building and finds out that it is the headquarters of Tapasvi Maharaj (Saurabh Shukla), a self-proclaimed godman who claims to have a direct connection with God. PK enters Tapasvi's room and sees his pendant hanging on a wall. He tries to take it back, but Tapasvi stops him and accuses him of being a thief.
Part 2
Meanwhile, in Belgium, Jagat Janani Sahni (Anushka Sharma), also known as Jaggu, is a student who falls in love with Sarfaraz Yusuf (Sushant Singh Rajput), a Pakistani student. They decide to get married despite their religious differences. However, on their wedding day, Sarfaraz does not show up at the registrar's office. Jaggu receives a letter from him saying that he has left her because he cannot go against his family's wishes.
Jaggu returns to India heartbroken and becomes a TV reporter. She is dissatisfied with her job as she has to cover trivial stories. One day, she sees PK distributing leaflets about Lord Shiva near a metro station. She is intrigued by his appearance and actions. She approaches him and asks him about his leaflets. He tells her that he is looking for Shiva who has stolen his pendant.
